On January 4, Navigant Research announced that its research showed that the technology to achieve zero net energy is available for almost any building type, yet cost and education remain a challenge.

Per the firm, the technology and regulation, have evolved to permit building types to achieve zero net energy beyond its original application to single-family residences and one-story office buildings.

Benjamin Freas, principal research analyst with Navigant Research remarked:

“An increasing number of ZNE building pilots has proven the feasibility of wider adoption. Yet, the cost associated with reaching net zero is currently not acceptable to most building owners.”

Continuing changes in regulation, education, and market awareness are expected to help move the ZNE and ZEB markets forward, with benefits such as operating cost reductions and increased energy security motivating its adoption.
